Erykah Badu was born Erica Abi Wright is a singer and songwriter who brings together elements of jazz, soul, hip hop and R & B music, which resulted in a musical taste which is her own. Sub-Genre She is known for, is neo-soul, which she called "First Lady of Neo-Soul".
Born in Texas, Badu spent most of his life being raised by her mother with the help of his grandmother. Her mother was an actress, and at age 4 Badu danced and sang on stageget their first taste of show business. It was during her teens that she decided to change her name to Erykah instead of Erica. She knew that Erica was her slave name and adding "Kah", which talks about the inner self. She took on the name Badu and Ashanti for "tenth born child" means "light and truth" in Arabic.
Booker T. Washington High School for Performing and Visual Arts, where she spent her high school years, and she went on to Gram BlingState University to study theater. In 1993, she left the university without a degree, working to pursue music full time. Finally, as a result of a demo, which included 19 songs, she would be signed by Universal Records.
"Baduizm" was the debut album, released Erykah Badu in 1997, which came out at # 2 on the charts. The first single from the album called "On & On" and sold well. "Live" was the first album that she would ever play live, and when she recorded that she was pregnant. In order to raise her child, she took some time, but in 2000 she came back better than ever, releasing the album "Mama's Gun." This album is considered more organic and earthy in sound, and although it was not as successful as her second, sheget a nomination for a Grammy with the song "Bag Lady".
For a time, Erykah Badu dealt Author Block, and she was underway for nearly two years for new inspiration that would help her to write something new. Finally, at the end of this trip, she went back into the studio with some good material, which resulted in the escaping of "Worldwide Underground". Four Grammy nominations were received for this album alone.
In the lastyears she continued to work on the album. In 2008 she published both "Badu" and "New Amerykah Part Two (4th World War)" and "New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh)" to be released sometime in 2009.
It is the personal and emotional lyrics together with the structured sounds that have made Erykah Badu such a beloved song writers and musicians over the years. She is not only known for their music, butto be an eclectic staff, performing with various artists.
